Contributors can be made up of any person, company, organization, hospital, physician, educator, agency or other entity that can help those of us looking for a greater understanding of our breathing problems. We are also interested in any new or old-fashioned medicines ( even old wives tales, non-conventional remedies or procedures that might still be available ). It would also be wonderful to hear ideas that can help us to communicate with our physicians in a respectful fashion.

“ Everybody Needs a Hippo “ focuses in a clear and humorous way the importance of factoring in quality of life considerations when making treatment path decisions. It was created and written by Adam Goodman and Nicolas Nastase. It is a little 36 – page, adult fairytale and a Dr. Seuss/Disneyesque style that takes the reader through the “patient side” of the medical experience. The hippo can stand for a hippopotamus or the Hippocratic Oath. With comic relief, the reader learns how to obtain real answers to her/his unique medical condition, resulting in the ability to make truly informed medical decisions. It introduces the Quality of Life chart, providing an easy way for doctors and patients to collaborate, Jointly participating in the prognosis, and enables the doctor to respect the patient when prescribing a treatment plan. It’s all about “ Patient- Centered Medicine “.

One of the authors, Nastase, speaks about the medical events in his life that led to the need to create a solution to a long history of mal-communications in the medical world. And today, with Big Pharma running rampant over the medical world, it is so much more important to improve communications and support our physicians.

When thinking about your quality of life, make sure you include the things we often take for granted, such as: touching, smelling, seeing, tasting, kissing, snuggling, talking, swallowing, eating, drinking, dancing, skate boarding, cooking, entertaining, reading, socializing, bathing, exploring, swimming, flying, being independent, hiking, running, playing the piano, just holding onto a loved one, etc.
The “My Quality of Life” Chart can lead to profoundly better communications between physicians and patients. By the patient sharing the activities that are life-meaningful, the physician can then adjust the prognosis to truly respect the patient. Be Aware: it’s not as easy as it may sound…
